Blog #10: 2D Design - Illustrator Self-portrait

Reflection

I chose Adobe Illustrator for the graphic design program and made an abstract self-portrait. I used primarily the pen tool and shape tool to create the outline and used the live paint bucket tool with gradient fills for the color. Moreover, I played with some presets and effects to make the background and add outline glow to highlight specific shapes.

The portrait's design was inspired by multiple-perspective art, which provides the viewer different ways to look at the same graphic. The image can be a side profile of a girl, a mushroom with a colorful cap, a small island, or a strange-shaped planet surrounded by a planetary ring. I also added visual symbols to tell my personal interest such as the cat and the color palette.

I have some experience with Illustrator before, but I've only learned the basics. This practice was more of a review process for me yet I still struggled a little to remember certain commands and skills at the beginning. I personally love how powerful and versatile the program is. It definitely takes perseverance and a lot of practice to achieve expertise, and I would love to keep exploring Illustrator for self-interest.

Connections to Classroom Teaching

3 ideas for using 2D design creatively in classrooms:
  1.  Using design programs to create informative posters related to a class topic;
  2.  Design your own font with the pen tool and shape tool on Illustrator, and establish a concept of style/visual coherence;
  3.  Turn artwork into vector form with lines, shapes, and colors to get familiar with basic deconstruct skills.

  2. Wow, it sounds like you really got creative with your self-portrait! Illustrator can definitely be a tricky program to master, but it sounds like you had a solid foundation to start with. And using the pen tool and shape tool to create the outline? That's some advanced stuff right there! I love how your portrait has multiple perspectives - it's like a graphic optical illusion!
