Blog #3: Digital collage/Fantastical landscape

For the digital collage assignment, I decided to keep working on the theme "animal and fungus" which I explored before but in cut-and-paste methods. I found the juxtaposition of animal and fungus exciting not only because the symbiosis relationship connects them together closely, but the resemblances of colors, structures, and forms found among the creatures also make the great potential for interesting collages.

I started off by browsing images of fungi and spontaneously associating them with animals they remind me of. I found these two images of fungi which instantly remind me of the shell of a turtle and the spikes on a hedgehog. Then, I looked for images of the animals that I thought would blend well with the fungi images. With the found images, I primarily used the segmentation tools in Photoshop to collage them together.

In the turtle collage, the cap of the mushroom becomes the turtle shell, and one of the mushroom caps were replaced by the original turtle shell. The cohesive colors of the two species made seamless engagement so they blended well in the natural environment. The hedgehog collage, however, is much more intentional with the strong contrast of color.
